Those in this community who knew Johnny may remember him most for his outstanding
athletic abilities and passion for sports. Johnny unfaithfully led his teams in baseball,
basketball and golf, contributing both as an individual as well as a team player. Later in
life, Johnny continued to improve his golf game, winning tournaments at the local golf
courses, and making his family proud.

But beyond those contributions on the playing field, were a set of beautiful qualities that
made John who he was - a friend to all and loved dearly by those who knew him well.
Johnny always looked up to those around him, but in the end, it is we who should look
up to him.

His undiscriminating love for others, his ability to laugh in periods of despair, and his
unswerving kindness are all qualities that we can admire.  Born of a big heart, John's
kindness was equally matched by his gratefulness to those around him. John's possessions
were few, but he was the type of friend who would give it all away if someone were to
merely ask.

Saddled with an uncompromising illness in his early twenties, John mounted a heroic and
successful effort to regain control over his life. Despite the enormous complexities that he
faced every day, Johnny maintained a remarkable ability to live simply and happily.

Always curious, John liked to learn new things and listen to others. His genuine interest
and big smile always made you feel good about yourself. John used to tell our mother
often that he had a very happy childhood growing up, and good memories. In that we
take comfort.

Johnny will be greatly missed by his family and his friends, but he will not be forgotten.
Our family grieves over this sad and tragic loss, but we know that God was by his side on
his last pilgrimage for peace.

The Hartsig family is extremely grateful to all those who have given their love and
support during this emotionally difficult period.
